We cannot say that the hunger problem is directly caused by overconsumption of rich countries but we cannot deny its immediate effects on the economies of poorer countries. today, all around the world farmers and workers are cramming in order to meet the demands of rich countries. you create the poverty trap like this: -first, create "credits" for poor people. give it to them if only they buy out of fashion technologies from 1st world countries. -once they are indebted, force them to pay back. they both have to pay the debt and you already got your money back by selling them stuff. -since the technology you sold them is years old, dont buy their products. if they produce real good, put some trade barriers and political reasons in order to keep their goods away from your market. -hey, they got a huge surplus of trinkets and you got both technology and money. they must be hopeless now. start buying their products at low price. say, sell them one computer and buy 2 tons of coffee in return. -this way, they will never put the two ends together and pay their debts and be able to feed their own citizens. they will keep on producing peanuts, apples, exotic souvenirs, whatever 1st world countries are willing to buy cheaply, in order to pay back their debts. since they have no money to invest, they will never be able to change their production patterns. in order to get a little bit more money they will produce more and more but this will cause a further fall in the general prices as supply increases. so, now u can buy 5 tons of coffee for one computer. -generally coffee doesnt feed people. coffee is just a stupid example. if u look closer you will see that the hungry coountries are also producing stuff but it just doesnt make enough money to feed them. the farmers who have been farming for themselves are now farming to earn money and buy something. so, subsistence economy left its place to some weird version of capitalism. due to shortage of other goods, they will always be too expensive and impossible to buy with the money earned from "raw" products. their products are just not profitable enough. the production policy of the country is not well-set because of unable or corrupt politicians. so, i see a big and fundamental economic problem in here. if we want the hungry to be fed first we need to give up cheap coffee, peanuts, soya beans and so on. direct foreign investments will not be a good way neither since it will only be in form of "agricultural firms" which will employ people like slaves and they will earn even less than when they had lands. the south american countries and foreign food firms are a typical example for this. and foreign direct investments only go to politically and socially stable countries, not war and hunger struck ones. if u were a firm, would u invest to a country where there's an internal war for example? or where the transport is to difficult or impossible?? how will you carry your raw materials and products while working in a sub-saharan country- with camels? teaching ppl how to catch fish rather than giving the fish is a very good idea. so, i also back microcredits and education, especially family planning and fight against diseases such as aids. but as far as i remember, the medical firms were unwilling to lower down the prices of aids medicine for Africa. how do you call this? erasing the debts of the countries is an imperative and first-hand solution of how to beat hunger. the second solution can be small amounts of money donated (not credit) in order to build infrastructure in these countries- roads, hospitals, irrigation etc. it would really cost less than what we expect. the problem is- is the rich really willing to share a little bit of its fortune with the poor. did you know that the daily consumption of water used for irrigation in golf fields is equal to daily worldwide consumption water amount? do u know how many ppl die out of draughts?? the solution is very obvious, but some will carry on masturbating their consciousness by donating 1 euro via telephone. cheers
